JOVAN SURUTKA
1921– 2006
Banjalučanin akademik Jovan Surutka, profesor Elektrotehničkog fakulteta u Beogradu, preminuo je 12. decembra 2006. godine u Beogradu, saopštila je Srpska akademija nauka i umjetnosti.
Jovan Surutka rođen je 1921. godine u Banjaluci, a diplomirao je na Elektrotehničkom odsjeku Tehničkog fakulteta u Beogradu 1947. godine. Bio je asistent u Institutu za telekomunikacije SANU, a godine 1950. izabran je za predavača na Elektrotehničkom fakultetu, za predmet Teorijske osnove telekomunikacione tehnike. Doktorat je odbranio 1957. na Elektrotehničkom fakultetu u Beogradu. U zvanje docenta izabran je 1954. godine, a vanredni profesor postao je 1959. Redovni profesor za predmet Teorijska elektromagnetika postao je 1968. godine, a predavao je i predmet 'Antene i prostiranje radio talasa'. Od 1976. do odlaska u penziju 1986. predavao je Osnove elektrotehnike.
Profesor Surutka doprinjeo je formiranju nastavnih planova i programa pri osnivanju novih elektrotehničkih fakulteta, u Banjaluci, Nišu i Skoplju i Fakulteta tehničkih nauka u Novom Sadu. Bio je dekan Elektrotehničkog fakulteta u Beogradu. Više godina bio je član Savjeta za visoko školstvo Republičkog izvršnog veća Srbije, član Savjeta Univerziteta u Nišu i član Prosvjetnog savjeta Srbije.
Autor je i više od 50 glavnih projekata i idejnih rješenja. Godine 1974. Surutka je izabran za dopisnog, a 1983. za redovnog člana SANU. Za zasluge na polju nauke, elektrotehničke struke i obrazovanja dobio je brojne nagrade i priznanja

THE LIFE AND SCIENTIFIC WORK OF PROFESSOR DR JOVAN SURUTKA
Jovan Surutka was born in 1921 in Banja Luka where he finished the High School in 1939. In 1947 he graduated at the Technical Faculty University of Belgrade on the department of Electrotechnics and got his Ph.D. on technical science in 1957. After graduation, he became an assistant on the Institute for Telecommunication of Serbian Academy of Science. In 1950 he became a lecturer at the Electrotechnical Faculty in Belgrade for the subject of Theoretical Basis of Telecommunication. In 1954 he was elected a docent and 1959 an associate professor for Theoretical electromagnetics. In 1968 he became a full professor. He also lectured subject Antennas and spreading of radiowaves. From 1976 till 1986 when he retired, he lectured on Basis of electrotechnics.
Professor Surutka was twice the dean of the Electrotechnical Faculty of Belgrade (1962 - 1964 and 1969 - 1970) and twice the associate dean. He was, for many years, the member of the council for High Education at the Republic of Serbia Executive Board. He was the member of the Council of College at the University of Nis and the member of Serbian Education Council.
Professor Surutka, as a dominant scientist in electrotechnics and education, has been awarded many times.
First he became a corresponding member of Serbian Academy of Science and Arts and then a full member in 1983. Since 1969, when it was established, he has been a member of the Serbian Science Association, an honorary member of Yugoslav Engineer Academy and Association of Machine and Electrotechnical Engineers and Technicians of Yugoslavia, and an honorary doctor at the Technical University of Banja Luka.
For his successes in science, culture and education he was awarded Medal of credit for nation with golden star, Medal of work with golden Wreath and Medal of Republic with Silver wreath.
He worked on establishing of University institutions, on their curricula and on improving of scientific work. For this he has been awarded the charter and the great Medallion of the University in Nis, the charter of the Faculty of Electronic Engineering in Nis and the charter of Electrotecnical Faculty in Skopje. He also worked on the development of our Radio and TV institutions. Radio Television Belgrade awarded him the charter and the golden Medallion of Radio Television Belgrade, and Radio Television Titograd awarded him the special Medallion.
Professor Surutka got a lot of awards for great scientific and competent contribution in papers which he published, either by himself or in association with his assistants, in journals or presented at scientific conferences. For this he has been awarded the Belgrade October prize for mathematics and technical science, Radio Television Belgrade Annual prize (three times, in 1971, 1978, 1998), Diploma of the Magazine "Tehnika", Tesla award for science and the golden Medallion "INOST" in 1998 for the best display on the Exibition of Innovations in Banja Luka.
He was the one of the scientists who organized the exhibition at the Nikola Tesla Museum and he worked on promotion of Tesla's life and work. Because of his great contribution at this subject, the respectable German magazine "Raum und Zeit" awarded him the Tesla's medal in 1998.
